Anxiety Disorders are a group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive fear, worry, or nervousness that is persistent and difficult to control. While anxiety is a normal response to stress, anxiety disorders involve intense and prolonged symptoms that interfere with daily life. These disorders can affect thoughts, emotions, physical health, and behavior, often creating a cycle of worry and avoidance.
A person with an anxiety disorder may experience persistent and uncontrollable worry, feel “on edge” or constantly alert, have irrational fears about everyday situations, and expect the worst even without a clear reason.
Anxiety often includes strong physical reactions, such as:
To cope with anxiety, a person may:
Anxiety disorders are highly treatable with proper care. Treatment includes medication and therapy.
Depression, also known as Major Depressive Disorder, is a common but serious mental health condition that affects how a person feels, thinks, and behaves. It goes beyond normal sadness and can persist for weeks or months, interfering with daily functioning and overall quality of life. Depression can impact emotional, physical, and cognitive wellbeing, making even simple tasks feel overwhelming.
Depression is treatable, and many people recover with the right support. Treatment includes medication and therapy.
PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. These events may involve danger, violence, serious injury, or emotional shock. While it is normal to feel distressed after trauma, PTSD occurs when symptoms persist, intensify, or interfere with daily functioning over time.
PTSD symptoms are generally grouped into four main categories:
PTSD is treatable, and many people experience significant improvement with proper care. Treatment includes medication, therapy, self-care strategies, and support systems.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterized by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce anxiety. These patterns can become time-consuming and distressing, interfering with daily life and functioning. Obsessions and compulsions are often linked, creating a cycle where anxiety drives behavior and the behavior temporarily relieves anxiety, but reinforces the cycle over time.
Obsessions are intrusive, distressing thoughts, urges, or images that repeatedly enter the mind.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce anxiety caused by obsessions. The relief from compulsions is temporary, leading to repeated cycles.
A person with OCD may:
OCD is treatable, and many people experience significant improvement with proper care. Treatment includes medication and therapy.
Bipolar Disorder is a mental health condition characterized by significant shifts in mood, energy, activity levels, and the ability to function. These shifts include emotional highs (mania or hypomania) and lows (depression), which can vary in intensity and duration. These mood episodes are more intense than typical mood changes and can interfere with daily life, relationships, and responsibilities.
Bipolar Disorder is manageable with long-term treatment. Treatment includes medication and therapy.
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects attention, impulse control, and activity levels. It often begins in childhood and can continue into adolescence and adulthood.
ADHD is typically grouped into three main symptom areas:
ADHD is manageable with a combination of approaches: medication, behavioral strategies, therapy, and lifestyle support.
Psychosis is a mental health condition characterized by a loss of contact with reality. It is not a single disorder, but rather a symptom that can occur in several medical, neurological, or psychiatric conditions such as Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disorder, Delusional Disorder, severe depression with psychotic features, and substance use. During an episode of psychosis, a person may experience changes in thoughts, perceptions, and beliefs that make it difficult to distinguish what is real from what is not.
A hallucination is when someone perceives something that is not actually there—seeing, hearing, feeling, or even smelling things without an external stimulus.
A delusion is a fixed false belief that a person strongly holds even when there is clear evidence that the belief is not true. The belief is not usually shared by others. Examples include:
Psychosis is treatable, especially with early intervention. Treatment includes medication, therapy, crisis care when needed, and recovery support programs.
